Firefighter Smokeless Tobacco

Cancer Risk and the Epidemic of Smokeless Tobacco in the U.S. Fire Service

There is an alarmingly high rate of smokeless tobacco (SLT) use in the fire service; this increases the cancer risk in a group already at heightened risk. We developed an occupationally-tailored intervention for the fire service, called FIRE-SLT, to promote SLT cessation among firefighters. We are currently evaluating the effectiveness of FIRE-SLT and have already seen some promising results.
