Firefighter Women’s Health – NIH

A Formative Examination of the Health and Safety of Female Firefighters

Using formative research methods, we examined cultural and structural barriers to maintaining health and wellness among female firefighters. We also looked into how these barriers negatively affect the recruitment of female firefighters.

This study resulted in foundational data on the health and safety of female firefighters and developed model policy and practice recommendations for fire departments. It raised questions concerning the high rate of miscarriages and preterm labor among female firefighters and led to a more in-depth FEMA study of these issues. Thanks to the work of our investigators we are continuing to fill the knowledge gap regarding female firefighter health concerns.
