Dr. Barbara Tempalski
Scientist
Dr. Tempalski's research focuses on the nexus of health, social, and political geographies in measuring the geographic distribution of services, response and prevention of HIV and opioid misuse among key populations (i.e., people who inject drugs, men who have sex with men, and high risk heterosexuals). She has been a NIDA-funded Investigator and collaborator for over 20 years on a number of studies including the recently funded study “Developing a public health measure of built environment to assess risk of nonmedical opioid use and related mortality in urban and non-urban areas in New Jersey” (R21 DA046739) where she is the Principal Investigator
She has extensive expertise on the study of programs as responses to the HIV and opioid epidemic and planning and conducting analyses of program trajectories, place determinants, and consequences. She broadly identify as a health and social geographer where her research expertise includes measuring and modeling the geographic distributions of HIV/AIDS epidemics among key populations and identifying the sociopolitical and structural responses to these distributions and measures in US metropolitan areas overtime. This research includes measuring the need for syringe exchange service provision and availability of substance use treatment services. At its core, her research concerns the health effects of multi-level place factors, operating in both urban and non-urban settings, to better quantify local area-level processes that contribute to behavioral risk and health inequalities among vulnerable populations.
Dr. Tempalski’s research on place-based risk environments has contributed to new knowledge in understanding how geographic place shapes HIV-opioid risk environment among vulnerable populations. That is, through understanding the dynamics of place, and how the socio-spatial and political processes related to a place, we can better help determine where HIV-opioid risk environments occur and implement needed services to reduce related harm.
Dr. Tempalski served as a consultant for USAID evaluating the utility of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) as a tool for integrating schistosomiasis control in Egypt. She also worked for UNICEF examining the utility of a GIS in evaluating Dracunculiasis eradication policies in West Africa. She has conducted reproductive health research in Nepal focusing on use of condoms and HIV knowledge among Nepalese women, and how physical landscape bears on this knowledge. She has further served as consultant to the Spatial Working Group, University of Porto, Portugal developing a geospatial epidemiology model for use by European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction, Lisbon for surveillance and monitoring of drug use and infectious disease.
Her research has been published in several top-tier journals, including the American Journal of Public Health, International Journal on Drug Policy, Substance Abuse Treatment, Prevention, AIDS and Behavior, and Policy and Health & Place.
